why Tongariro Crossing Shuttle Prices Are Changing
If you are booking transport for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing this season, you may notice that shuttle and car park prices have increased.
Now, we totally get that price changes are never the most exciting part of planning a hike. But in this case, the reason is pretty simple (and important) to explain.
The contribution paid to the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) for each person transported to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing has increased.
Previously, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing Community Contribution was $3 + GST per person transported. It is now $10 + GST per person transported.
That means the DOC Community Contribution has increased by $7 + GST per person.
For visitors, this means the final shuttle and car park price has changed to $78.00 per person.
Why has the price changed?
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of New Zealand’s most popular day hikes. It is also a fragile alpine environment, a culturally significant place, and a landscape that needs ongoing care.
Every season, thousands of people walk across volcanic terrain, past Red Crater, Emerald Lakes, Blue Lake and down through the Ketetahi side of the track. That level of visitor use has real and significant costs.
Tracks need to be maintained. Toilets need to be serviced. Signs need to be updated. Roads and access points need managing. Safety information needs to be shared. Rangers need to be present. Visitors need to be guided through a place that is beautiful, but also exposed, changeable and sometimes unforgiving.
The increase helps support the work needed to keep the Tongariro Alpine Crossing safe, protected and well managed.
Is this a new fee to walk the Tongariro Crossing?
No.
This is not a general charge to walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
The change relates to the Community Contribution paid by transport operators for each person transported. If you are booking a shuttle or car park package, this contribution is included as part of your total transport fee.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing itself remains a public walking track. However, because the track is a one-way hike and parking is limited, most visitors use shuttle transport to get to the start of the walk and return safely afterwards.
What does the new price include?
The updated shuttle and car park fee is $78.00 per person.
This includes several different components:
- Shuttle transport
- Secure car parking
- Car park facilities and support
- DOC Community Contribution
- DOC road-use activity fee
- GST
The shuttle portion helps cover the cost of operating vehicles, fuel, compliance, maintenance, insurance and driver wages.
The car park portion helps cover secure parking, staff, cameras, lighting, toilets, WiFi, booking systems and customer support.
The DOC Community Contribution supports the ongoing care and management of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
The DOC activity fee covers road-use transport access for approved operators.
GST is collected and paid to the New Zealand Government.

Why this contribution matters
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is not just another day walk.
It passes through Tongariro National Park, a dual World Heritage area recognised for both its natural volcanic landscape and its cultural significance. It is a place of deep importance, and it deserves to be looked after properly.
The Crossing has become incredibly popular, especially during the warmer months. That popularity brings people, energy and economic value to the region, but it also brings pressure.
More walkers means more wear on the track. More people using facilities. More demand for safety information. More need for clear signage, visitor management and protection of sensitive areas.
A small increase in the contribution helps support the work required to keep the Crossing safe, accessible and beautiful for future visitors.
A reminder of why care matters
The 2025 fires in and around Tongariro National Park have been a clear reminder that this is a special, sensitive and sometimes vulnerable landscape.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing passes through an alpine volcanic environment with huge cultural, environmental and visitor value. Keeping it safe and well managed takes ongoing work, from track care and signage to visitor information, facilities, access management and conservation.
The updated contribution is part of that bigger picture. It helps support the long-term care of the Crossing, so people can continue to experience it safely and respectfully.
A better experience for hikers
Good visitor management matters.
When the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is well looked after, everyone benefits. Hikers get a safer and more enjoyable experience. The environment is better protected. Local hapū and DOC can continue their work caring for the maunga. Transport operators can help visitors access the track in an organised and responsible way.
The goal is not just to get people to the start of the track.
The goal is to help people experience the Crossing safely, respectfully and with a better understanding of the place they are walking through.
Planning your hike
If you are planning to walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, we recommend booking your transport in advance, especially during busy periods.
The track is one way, so transport planning is important. Most hikers start at Mangatepopo and finish at Ketetahi. Using a shuttle means you can leave your vehicle at the Ketetahi car park and be transported to the start of the walk, ready to hike back to your vehicle at the end of the day.
It also means your transport is arranged around the practical realities of the Crossing, including weather, timing, parking and safety.
Thank you for helping protect the Crossing
No one loves a price increase.
But the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a special place, and special places need care.
Your fee helps support the transport, parking, facilities, safety systems and conservation work that make the Crossing possible for thousands of visitors each year.
By booking with an approved transport operator, you are not just getting to the track. You are helping support a better, safer and more sustainable experience for everyone who visits.
