How Long Does It Take to Walk the Tongariro Crossing?
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of New Zealand’s most popular day hikes, offering breathtaking views of volcanic landscapes, emerald lakes, and panoramic vistas.
If you’re planning to tackle this iconic trek, one of the most common questions is: How long does it take?
The Short Answer
On average, it takes between 6 to 8 hours to complete the Tongariro Crossing.
The Long Answer
The time it takes to walk the Tongariro Crossing can vary significantly based on several factors:
- Distance: The crossing is approximately 20.2 kilometers (12.5 miles) long.
- Fitness Level: Your physical condition plays a crucial role. Fit and experienced hikers might complete the track in 6 hours or less, while those less experienced or in average shape might take 8 hours or more.
- Weather Conditions: Clear, calm days make for easier hiking. Strong winds, rain, or poor visibility can slow you down significantly.
- Breaks and Photo Stops: The Tongariro Crossing offers stunning scenery. Many hikers take frequent breaks to rest, eat, and capture photos, which can extend the total time.
- Crowds: During peak season (December to February), the track can get crowded, potentially slowing your progress.
The Obsession with Hiking Time
Most people only do the crossing once and there is no point trying to beat the clock. It’s natural for people to want to know how long the hike is, but don’t forget that that the Tongariro Crossing is not a race.
So slow down, take in the surroundings – be sure to take lots of photos. You’ll also stop for lunch at some point, so again, be chill and take your time.
Many people get stressed that they will miss their return shuttle bus and they do not want to wait for hours for the next bus. That’s why it’s best to use the private Ketetahi car park, which is located at the end of the crossing.
When you park there in the morning, you get an included shuttle to the start of the crossing, so it’s an easy way to avoid the trap of return shuttles. Then, you can relax and take your time on the hike. When you finish the walk, it’s a ten minute walk back to the car park.
Breaking It Down
Here’s a rough breakdown of the track:
- Mangatepopo Car Park to Soda Springs: 1-1.5 hours
- Soda Springs to South Crater: 1 hour (includes the challenging Devil’s Staircase)
- South Crater to Red Crater: 1 hour
- Red Crater to Emerald Lakes: 30 minutes
- Emerald Lakes to Blue Lake: 30 minutes
- Blue Lake to Ketetahi Hut: 1-1.5 hours
- Ketetahi Hut to Ketetahi Car Park: 2 hours
