The climb requires both physical strength and mental resilience, as the trail is steep and narrow, making frequent stops difficult.
Upon reaching the South Crater, the terrain levels out, resembling a desert. The descent is particularly challenging due to the steep, loose scoria, requiring careful navigation and good balance to ensure safety.
Can you do the Tongariro Crossing on your own?
In summer most people climb the volcanoes of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on their own or with friends.
If you’re craving a solo adventure, let your friends and family know when you’re going and check in with them during or after the hike.
You can use the services of a guide in summer, though it’s not necessary. That said for folks wanting to take on the crossing in winter, using a guide is strongly recommended!
Also, plan your transportation in advance so you don’t end up at the other end of the trail hours away from your car at nightfall. Do the wise thing and book a secure car park and Tongariro Crossing shuttle from the Ketetahi car park.
If you are physically fit and able to self-motivate, you will have no problem getting out and about. This can be a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the pristine nature of Aotearoa. Also, as the Tongariro Crossing is the most popular hiking spot in NZ, you’ll have plenty of other trekkers around you in case you need anything.

Take extreme care on this trail between June and October. The area can be covered in snow and frost. If you are an experienced climber, you should still do the hike with a qualified guide.
