WHO WE ARE

Tongariro maunga (mountain) is held in high esteem and has cultural significance to our people. We live here and our maori ancestry ties us to this land.

Our ancestor, Ngatoro-i-rangi, first climbed Tongariro and claimed this land for his people who live here today, Ngati Tuwharetoa.

Tongariro National Park is a dual world heritage site for its natural landscape and cultural heritage.

On your transport shuttle journey we share our stories so you are enlightened with our values of guardianship, care and the respect we hold for our maunga, Tongariro, and the spiritual connection that we hope will enrich your experience while safely hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

TE WHANAU

Our whanau (family) consist of carpark staff and transport shuttle operators who live or affiliate to the sub-tribe Ngati Hikairo-ki-Tongariro, who reside around Tongariro maunga.
Alongside our own transport vehicles we also contract Whanau Shuttle Operators who run their businesses in their own right. We are proud to foster their autonomy and prosperity as enterprising business owners.

ABOUT US

Tongariro Transport Hub is a Limited Partnership Company and Capital Venture of Lake Rotoaira Forest Trust, an organisation that manages and administers Lake Rotoaira Forest pine plantation (9,600ha – 38% total land share) and land in its natural state (~15,000ha – 62% total land share) on private, maori-owned land estate including land parcels at the base of the northern slopes of Tongariro maunga.
We are a values-based group of companies that aim to create employment for landowners, re-invest into maintaining biodiversity and pest management across our lands and foster economic growth in our local community and for our beneficiaries. As a group we also hold strong to our tikanga (values) in decision-making and how we create and operate commercial business while maintaining the integrity of our culture.
What you pay for –
- We employ staff, at minimum, the living wage rate (proudly our biggest operational expense),
- we contribute funds toward environmental management both internally to our environment team and externally to the Department of Conservation (DOC) from the concessionaire fee,
- our DOC concession fee also contributes towards employing kaitiaki (guardian) rangers on the trail,
- we donate funds to our local LandSAR (Search and Rescue) team of volunteers, and
- we continually re-invest back into our business to improve our services to visitors.
